3rd Grade-DeMyer

Course Description

Welcome! Mrs. Granja and I share the third grade teaching position. I teach 3rd grade on Monday and Tuesday and Ms. Granja teaches the rest of the week. We communicate daily and have the same standards for our students.

We have a lot of fun in third grade! This year we had the opportunity to go on five field trips including: The Palouse Discover Science Center, Ferdinand's Ice Cream, The Prichard Art Gallery and two farms! Our students complete engineering challenges throughout the year and raise silk worms.

Field Trips!

We have one last field trip to the library on Tuesday, May 28th. We will be catching the public bus at 11:18 and arriving at the library around 11:45. We will leave the library around 12:00 and will return to school by 12:15.

If you would like to join us you can ride the bus with the class or meet us at the library. Just let me know if you plan on meeting up.

If you would like to put a limit on the number of books your student may check out send me an email. Your student must have their physical copy of their library card in order to check out any books.

Pizza Party!

Our class earned a pizza party from bringing in the most box tops. We will be enjoying this pizza on Monday, June 3rd. Each student will get one piece of pizza so if they need more for lunch please pack them something that day.

Special Guest!

We have a special guest coming to our classroom on Tuesday, June 4th to talk about water around the world and leading a hands-on water activity.

Writing!

We have been working on our own versions of fractured fairytales. This is a spin-off of an original fairytale such as The Three Little Pigs. Ask your student what their book is about and look forward to reading a completed copy by the end of next week.

student responses
Before our state testing this week, we had 3rd, 4th and 5th graders spend 25 minutes outside doing cardio game stations. This is something new we tried this year and I wanted to see what the kids thought. I had my 3rd graders respond on a sticky note to the question, " How do you feel about exercising before testing?" Here are just some of their responses. 20/22 responses were positive.

Field Trip Next Week!

On Tuesday, May 7th we will be taking our field trip to the PDSC and Ferdinand's Ice Cream Shop. We will leave MCS at 9:30 and return by 2:00. If you would like to join us please sign up on the signup genius link. It would be great if we could get 1-2 more chaperones.

LUNCH

We will be eating lunch at PDSC. If your student is ordering lunch from the school please let the office know so they can plan ahead. Field trip lunches usually consist of a PB and J sandwich, yogurt, and fruit/vegetable.

Email me if you have any questions.

Library

We will also be taking a field trip to the library in a few weeks. If you would like your student to be able to check out books, please make sure they have a library card ahead of time. This will require you to go to the library with your student and show proof of residency.

Parent permission form

Happy Friday!

Today your student is coming home with another parent permission form for you to read and sign. This is the same form that went out last week. This form gives permission to use your student's data in my research study. No names will be included in this study and everything will be confidential. This study is the final phase of my Masters Program. If you need a new form I have attached one to this message. It would be great if I could have these turned in early next week. Please email me if you have any questions.

students looking at the clouds
Today we learned about how clouds are formed and made our own cloud in a mason jar! Ask your student about this and what they learned. They should be able to tell you how clouds are formed and why it rains.

3rd Grade up date!

We have started our unit on weather. Here is an online game your student can play at home relating to what we are learning in class. Soon we will make our own clouds in a jar!

Math

We have been practicing using a ruler, measuring items to the nearest inch, half in and a quarter inch. If your student has time at home have them practice this skill! it's a tricky one for most third graders. Soon we will be moving on to fractions.

May 7th we will be taking a field trip to the Palouse Discovery Science Center and Ferdinand's Ice cream. Students will get a hands-on chemistry lesson at PDSC and then learn how the cheese and ice cream is made at Ferdinand's. We will enjoy some ice cream when we are there.
