3rd Grade-DeMyer

Course Description

Welcome! Mrs. Granja and I share the third grade teaching position. I teach 3rd grade on Monday and Tuesday and Ms. Granja teaches the rest of the week. We communicate daily and have the same standards for our students.

We have a lot of fun in third grade! This year we had the opportunity to go on five field trips including: The Palouse Discover Science Center, Ferdinand's Ice Cream, The Prichard Art Gallery and two farms! Our students complete engineering challenges throughout the year and raise silk worms.

Upcoming Field Trip!

We will be taking a field trip to the Public Library on December 17th. My goal is for students to check out books so they have some new things to read over winter break! In order for kids to check out a book they have to have a library card. If you would like to get your student a library card you can do so by going to the public library and filling out an application as well as bringing something that proves your address (usually the utility or internet bill). A library card is free and students must have them to check out any books. If you are not interested in applying for a library car, your student can still enjoy browsing the library's selection of books during the field trip. I am looking for a few parents to join us so if you are interested please send me an email.

Field Trip Tomorrow!

We will be partnering with 4th grade to attend a musical field trip at U of I. Students will be back at school in time for lunch.

We read about why leaves change colors in the fall and then did a fun experiment with coffee filters. Ask your student what it was all about!

Online Resources

We have a lot awesome resources available to us! Students have passwords for all of these website.

Zearn is a great one for math. It reads everything to the student and moves at the pace of each individual. It is comparable to Khan Academy but more appropriate for elementary students. This website lets parents track the progress of their student.

Xtramath is a website strictly for math fact practice. It keeps tract of the facts the student gets right and tests them on the facts they are still learning. This website lets parents track the progress of their student.

newsELA gives students access to current news articles as well as large selection of nonfiction text. Students love sharing what they learn from this website with each other.

This photo shows all the ways the class came up with to solve 19+18
We had our first math talk today. This is a time where we get to have a conversation about math. I post a problem on the board and the students get to share all the different ways they came up with to solve the problem. We are learning that there is more then one way to solve a problem and all thoughts are equally important.

What we are learning in math

We have hit the ground running in math! Mrs. Granja is focusing on place value and number sense. Next, students will learn rounding and borrowing. This complements the addition properties chapter I am focusing on. Addition properties is an introduction to the rules in math we have to follow. Ask your student if they can tell you what the commutative, identity and associative properties are.
