Middle School Drafting/Engineering Design

Course Description

Semester One: Drafting:

This class introduces students to the use of technical drawings and understanding the concepts found in the areas of architecture, art, engineering, science, and mathematics. Students learn the basics of drafting and design with an emphasis on geometric shapes and drawing skills. This class is drawing based (fine motor skills are essential), focusing on 2-dimensional projections and one-point and two-point perspectives. The course will build from making simple drawings of different blocks to a basic blueprint and design of houses, culminating in the design and construction of models of a bridge and a house.

Drafting II students will be given the option of using an AutoCAD (computer animated design) program to complete the projects.

Semester Two: Engineering Design

This class examines the Engineering Design Process and construction through monthly themed units (Roller Coasters, Computer Block Programming, Inventions, etc). The curriculum follows the LAUNCH CYCLE, which uses real-life principles of design to create projects. This is a writing, math, and collaboration-heavy class!
