Middle School Life Skills

Course Description

Life Skills is a semester course than can be taken as many semesters as the student wants to take it. The information changes for each subsequent semester. I do encourage every middle school student to take the class at least one semester before they leave middle school. There is a lot of great information they need to succeed in life beyond school!

Mini-economy covers the students having a "job" during the Life Skills class. They get paid Life Skills Money for their job, then they pay taxes, rent, utilities, food, and car expenses as well as insurance. They learn to budget their money and learn how to write checks. This has been a very valuable course for the students!

Cooking and Nutrition covers many forms of cooking from scratch with a feast at the end of the semester. Nutrition covers vitamins and minerals as well as many other nutrients.

Sewing includes the basic skills with the sewing of a grocery bag and a pillow. The materials for the basic skills are provided. After the basic skills are mastered, the student is required to sew a personal project and the materials need to be provided by the student.

I teach certain talents such as voice, basic guitar and basic piano. We do have keyboards to use for piano but no guitars except my own. If the student really is not interested in any of these talents, they will be exercising during that portion of the class.

I also teach careers and consumer math to help the students start thinking about their future.

This class is taught the last hour of the day as an elective course.
