Elementary Art-1 Assignments

Hey there!


We made it to the last day of Art! Thanks for sticking with it and being such great Art students. I've really enjoyed seeing my lesson ideas come to fruition through each of your unique imaginations, and I hope the lessons have given you some fun time during your school day to just relax and create. I'm amazed at some of the work that was handed in, and very proud indeed. I hope you learned a little about art techniques and art history, and we'll be building on that even further next year. 


For now I wanted to end the year with something simple. Please draw me a picture depicting what you will be doing over the summer! Maybe you're going on a fun trip. Maybe you have fun plans with your family. Maybe you'll go camping, swimming, hiking, kayaking? Ms. Jones will be visiting family in Rhode Island, swimming, kayaking, doing a lot of astrophotography, and making lots of art! I hope you have lots of fun things planned, so please draw me a picture of what they are and send it back to me. White, unlined paper, and as always...colored in. See you next year!

For this week's project the main challenge is  to focus on how we can turn flat shapes into a 3-D form. 


You're going to start by drawing and coloring a variety of different shapes. Next, cut out the shapes. Finally, assemble your shapes into a freeform organic sculpture using a glue stick to make your sculpture stable. There are limitless possibilities to this project, so please have fun with it and as always use your most unique imagination! Send a picture of your sculpture to me when you are done. 


Work like this is very much inspired by the work of the famous artist, Joan Miró who was a Spanish sculptor. I'll include a quick video all about Joan and his sculpture work below as well.

There's a quote I read recently that said, "Creative people do not see things for the way they are, they see them for what they could be."


There's an Ecuadorian illustrator by the name of Javier Perez who specializes in whimsical and fun doodles incorporating everyday objects. That is precisely what you will be doing this art lesson. Some examples of his work are attached below. 


You will also be creating 9 doodles for me incorporating one or more different objects from around your home. Think about how YOU could also see those objects not for what they are...but what they could be. These doodles should be on white/unlined paper (go ahead and fold your paper into 9 sections if that helps!) and I would prefer them to also be colored in. You do not necessarily need to glue these objects onto the paper or anything, just position them on the paper as you like. Have fun, use your imagination, and I can't wait to see what you create!

Hello! 


For this lesson we will be learning about our artist for the month of May: Laurel Burch. She was an American artist and designer who lived from 1945-2007 and was known mostly for her painting and jewelry making. Check out the video below all about her and her art, and then learn to draw one of her fantastic cats. 


I want you to fill your cat in with several different patterns, shapes, and colors in a very Laurel Burch style. Please also complete the background around your cat as well. When it's all colored in with bright vibrant colors, please share your Laurel Burch cat with me when done!

This week's lesson I want you to try your hand (quite literally) at drawing some optical art! Optical art is art that involves optical illusions. Op art is abstract, with many better known pieces created in black and white. Typically, they give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or of swelling or warping. Today we will be drawing an op-art hand!


Take a large sheet of white, unlined paper and trace your hand onto it and make sure to include a little bit of arm as well. You will then be drawing a series of straight, horizontal lines across your paper overlapping your drawn hand too. All lines should be straight and horizontal, but the line drawn on your hand should always be slightly curved UPWARD. 


This may not make sense reading it so I have a series of examples and even a video below for you to follow. Color your work in and share your hand with me when done!

Today will be a fun art lesson based on a popular book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" by Mo Willems. 


Please watch/listen to this story below and then follow the drawing prompt to draw your own pigeon! Afterwards I want you to draw a speech bubble coming from your pigeon's beak (and with or without parental help) I want you to write inside that speech bubble "Don't let the pigeon__________." You will fill in that blank with what YOUR pigeon shouldn't do! I have examples below. This is a silly and fun drawing lesson. Please color it all in and share with me when you're done!

Hello!

Since it's getting nicer outside (slowly) I thought it would be fun for you to experiment with making a painting out of natural materials. You will be making your own paint, and even forging your own paintbrush!

There are so many ways you can make paint including coffee, tea, fruit juices, spices, food coloring, old markers, and even mud! I want you to test out mixing some of these materials with a little water to see what results you can get to use. Then...I want you to go outside and make your own natural paintbrush using a stick and whatever you would like to tie with a rubber band at the end. Maybe make a few! Use things like grass blades, flowers, leaves, and bushy bits. I have included lots of great visual examples below. Anything can make a mark and can be used as a tool to make art!

When it's all said and done and you have your natural paint, and your natural paintbrush I'd like you to paint me a picture of your absolute favorite thing about nature. Use a nice big sheet of white (unlined paper) and as always please share it with me when you're done. See you next week!

For this assignment I want you to think about all of the different emotions you can go through in life. Happiness, sadness, hunger, impatience, fear, joy, surprise, envy, disgust, anticipation. I want you to pick 3 of those and draw me 3 different self portraits of your face (head, neck shoulders only) displaying that emotion. So 3 self portraits...each displaying a different emotion. 


I do expect these to be colored in, so think about how color can affect your emotion self portrait as well. Yellow for happiness, blue for sadness, green for envy etc. Work on your 3 self portraits and please send me a picture of all 3 including what emotion is being displayed.

Hello! For this assignment you will be constructing a sculpture for me out of recycled/upcycled materials. Many famous artists work with "recycled art" making sculptures and collages out of anything typically discarded like scraps of cloth, plastic bits, cardboard, packaging material, cans, bottlecaps, plastic bottles, plastic and paper bags, straws, paper towel/TP rolls, plastic forks/spoons/knives, paper plates, tin foil, food packages...things you may typically find in the garbage can can easily be turned into art if you look at it the right way! 


That being said...please do NOT grab dirty and gross things out of the garbage can. Use clean/found objects that may normally be thrown out in your household. Once you've collected your items I'd like you to glue/tape/assemble them into place to form some sort of animal sculpture of your choice. Please let me know what you have made so I know what I'm looking at.


I've included a few videos of trash to treasure art and the possibilities really are endless. Have fun and share your work with me when you're done!

Hello! This week's lesson will allow you the opportunity to submit your work of art to a real local art contest! We do this at least once a year and I always have a few winners. Winners in the past have received a gift card to Book People and a certificate of merit. It is called the MLK Art and Essay Contest and of course we will be doing the art portion. I've attached the info on the bottom. Of course submission is OPTIONAL...but IF you would like to enter your work into this contest you just need to submit your finished drawing or poster to me, Ms. Jones, here at MCS before Tuesday April 20th. Submissions will be picked up by someone here at MCS that afternoon and winners announced shortly after. Every year is a different drawing prompt for different grades.

This year for grades K-3 the drawing prompt is: "Make a poster showing kids doing things that make them happy and healthy".

For grades 4 and 5 the drawing prompt is: "Draw an illustration or make a poster of what you feel supports health and well-being".

No matter if you are submitting to the contest or not this is still the art assignment for this week. I expect artwork uploaded as pictures for me to grade like we always have in the past...but again...if you want your work submitted to the contest I need the hard copy dropped off to me. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Of course work is expected to be on white UNLINED paper, or even poster board, and colored in.

PLEASE if you want to submit this to the contest feel free to take as much time as you need. No need to submit right away if you are truly taking your time, or intend to take your time on it. Thanks!

Hello! We're getting closer to warmer weather (finally) and I don't know about you but I'm feeling Spring creep into the air. To honor our artist of the month for March, Andy Goldsworthy, I want you to think about going outside and making some nature art of your own this week. First, to get inspired, please watch the attached video and read all about Andy on our artist of the month page. Afterwards I want you to go outside and get inspired to make your own nature art! Now that it's finally warming up go outside and make an arrangement, a sculpture, a repeating pattern, a picture out of an assortment of things you can find. You can use things like flowers, grass, sticks, rocks, wood, water, ice, leaves etc. Think about shape, size, color, texture as you select your objects. I would prefer whatever you make to be something you make and leave outside for all to enjoy. Snap a picture and show me your natural found object arrangement/sculpture! I hope you had a great break!

Hello! For this lesson we will be doing an artwork based on our artist of the month for February...Yayoi Kusama. Yes I know it's already March so we're a little late...but better late than never! You can read more about her on our Artist of the Month page in our virtual classroom.

Yayoi is a Japanese artist who is OBSESSED with dots. When she was ten, her mother took away her brushes and canvases because it was not culturally acceptable for a young Japanese girl to paint. However, she was determined to become an artist and her dream brought her to New York. She says: "When I first arrived in New York, I went to the top of the Empire State Building. Seeing this big city, I promised myself that one day I would conquer New York and make my name in the world with my passion for the arts and mountains of creative energy stored inside myself."

She works in a wide variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, collage, and environmental installations. She uses vibrant colors with an emphasis in repetition and pattern. She loves to use dots and explore the idea of infinity.

For this lesson I want you to draw the first letter of your first name (large and blocky, not just lines) on a sheet of white (preferably black if you have it) unlined paper. You will be decorating the inside of your letter, as well as the background, with DOTS! You can use any art medium you prefer...crayons, markers, colored pencils, paints...but the most important thing is that it is fully covered in dots inside and out.

Use different sized dots. Different colored dots. Make sure to leave a space between your dots! Have fun with it and share your finished work with me when you're done!

Hello!

As some of you may have heard we landed on Mars last week! The Mars "Perseverance" rover landed safely on Feb. 18th and now we can start doing all kinds of amazing science. Did life once exist there, or does it still exist today? Perseverance might be able to find out for us. This makes my nerdy little heart so happy! I wanted to work with you all on a small science + art themed lesson so we'll be learning about the "colors of Mars".

Watch the attached videos, read through the attached PowerPoint, and print one of the attached "Mars Landscape Coloring Sheets" (or if you don't have a printer recreate your own on a sheet of white paper). You will need earth-toned crayons (rusty red, brown, yellow-ochre, white, black, beige etc.) and I suggest also providing glue and kitchen spices of various colors that are brown/white/red/black/yellow like cinnamon, baking powder, paprika, pepper, curry, turmeric, etc. to build up "mineral" texture but this is totally optional.

Mars, known as the Red Planet, is a mostly dry and dusty place. A variety of colors can be seen on the surface, including the predominant rusty red the planet is known for. This rusty red color is iron oxide, just like the rust that forms here on Earth when iron oxidizes – often in the presence of water. Some places on Mars are bright white with ice or silica deposits and other places are any of a wide variety of colors between white and rusty red. The array of colors we see on Mars is a result of mineral diversity – different minerals have different colors – just like on Earth. In images, some regions appear to have different colors because of shadows, reflected sunlight or even seasonal changes, such as the appearance of permafrost and flow features.

I want you to color in your Mars coloring sheet using the colors of Mars. Once your landscape is colored...if you so choose...you may apply glue and spices for texture! Apply glue in specific areas, sprinkle different colored "mineral" spices on top (shake off any extra), and let it dry. The more colors you use, the more accurate and full of texture your landscape will be. Another thing I'd like to note is that you don't have to use the printable sheet. If you'd like to come up with a Martian landscape of your own design that's totally okay too.

When done I'd like you to answer the question..."What do the colors on Mars represent?" Have fun and share your Martian landscapes with me when you're done!

Hello! For this lesson you'll be trying your hand at one point perspective. Perspective can add depth to your artwork! Please watch the attached video to learn how to do this step by step. All you will need for this is a sheet of white (UNLINED) paper, a pencil with a good eraser, a ruler, a black marker for outlining your lines, and some crayons or watercolors to color it all in. Feel free to follow along with the video, OR if you're comfortable enough with the rules of one point perspective like the "vanishing point" and "horizon line" feel free to create your own scene instead.

Make sure the whole paper is used...that it is colored in completely...and please share your perfect perspective piece with me when you are done!

For this lesson you are going to be a designer. Think about all the food products you have in your home. Take a walk through your kitchen and look at all the labels, designs, colors, and lettering that are on food products in your kitchen. Things like cereal boxes, snack food wrappers, candy wrappers, pop, canned foods...compare how different they all are.

Next I would like you to also design your own unique food product. You should use a piece of 8.5 x 11 printer paper and pretend that this paper IS the label for your product...so therefore you should be using the ENTIRE sheet of paper for your design. Come up with a brand new food product that has never been thought of before. This could be a new cereal, snack food, soup, candy, pop...whatever you'd like to design. I want you to come up with this new food product and design a fun advertising label for it. Your label should include what it's named, perhaps a picture of it or a design representing your product, think about what colors you want to represent your product, flavor, nutritional info etc. Have fun with it and as always...share your amazing new product label with me!

For this week’s lesson we are going to be doing the Getty Art Challenge. We did this last year, and because I got so many fabulous results, I really want to do it again this year. I’ve included the video of submissions from students last year for your enjoyment. Please, if you participated last year do not do the same artwork...and students this year...do not copy anything in this video please. I’m showing you this mostly to give you an idea of what I’m expecting.

Last year, the Getty Art Museum challenged the public to look through their online archives and pick one artwork to recreate using only simple household items. I’ve included some of those as well. And that’s precisely what I’d like you to do. Please peek through the Getty Art Museums online archives and recreate an artwork of your choice using any creative means necessary. Again...do not copy these examples. Share it with me when you’re done, and have fun!

Hello! This week’s lesson will be geared towards Chinese New Year 2021 which kicks off on February 12th. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring festival, and each new year kicks off a new animal’s zodiac year. I've included the Chinese zodiac just for fun. Which animal are you? Last year was the year of the Rat, this year will be the year of the Ox. People get 7 days off work, and celebrate for a full 16 days!

They celebrate with family, have big dinners, light off fireworks, and kids get new clothes and red envelopes filled with money from relatives. It’s believed the color red wards off evil spirits and is a symbol of good luck. Dragons are also a symbol for the New Year because they’re considered bringers of wealth and good fortune. It's believed the longer the dragon is, the more good luck it will bring!

For this art assignment I want you to draw me your BEST New Year dragon. Please draw your dragon on a sheet of white unlined paper, and make sure it fills the page (and isn’t tiny). Your dragon should also have a background. What I will NOT grade is tiny pencil drawings with no color and no background. I will send it back and have you try again. How your dragon looks is up to you, just have fun with it and share your dragon with me when you're done!

For this lesson we’ll be doing a project centered around our artist of the month for January: Frida Kahlo. First, check out the Artist of the Month page in our classroom and read all about her. Next you will listen to the book in the attached video all about her. Finally you will be drawing me a portrait of Frida Kahlo using the attached directed drawing sheet. Take it step by step and do your best. When you go in to draw the flowers in her hair...instead of the “donut” shaped ones on the sheet...I’d like you to draw me some flowers of various shapes, colors, and sizes in her hair to make it a little more interesting. Frida was a very colorful person. There was also a lot of symbolism and animals in her artwork like various fruits, flowers, large tropical leaves, monkeys, and various parrots that you can feel free to include in the background if you wish. As always...on white paper please, colored in, with a background. And don’t forget the monobrow! Share with me when you’re done!

It may be the middle of winter, but some of our bird friends are still out and about. I have lots at my feeder each morning, how about you? For this lesson I want you to visit the attached website from Audubon, and on that page there will be LOTS of different kinds of birds that are native to the Northwestern region where we live. There are even sounds to go along with them so you know what each bird sounds like! I want you to pick your absolute favorite bird and draw me a picture of it on white paper. This of course should also be colored in, and please place your bird in some kind of environment by drawing a background around it. Have fun, and let me know if you've ever seen this bird in real life!

Did you know that no one knows when humans first began to draw and create art? Explorers, scientists, historians, and even kids have found prehistoric cave paintings that were created 30,000 BC! During that time, the early humans were nomads, who hunted and gathered their food, moving around to follow the animals they hunted. This period was called the Stone Age because their tools were made of stone, bone, or wood.

One of the most important examples of prehistoric cave paintings was actually discovered by 4 kids! In 1940, four boys were taking their dog for a walk in Lascaux, France. While they were talking, their dog ducked into a hole, that led to one of the many limestone caves of the area. The boys figured out a way to follow it underground, and when they lit a match to see better, they were shocked to discover that the walls and ceilings were covered in primitive animal paintings! When they came back the next day with their teacher, they explored the cave more. These caves have more than 600 paintings, and 1500 engravings, that were created more than 20,000 years ago!

The majority of the cave paintings are of moving animals, that lived during this time in that part of France: bison, deer, horses. There are also some human figures and hands. The art was made using charcoal from their fires, and reds/yellows/browns from certain minerals. At the time, tourists were allowed into the caves to admire and observe the early human art. Soon, the exposure to light, microorganisms from the visitors, and the air pollution began to fade and deteriorate the paintings.

First you are going to watch the short videos all about the Lascaux cave paintings. Next refer to the sheet attached and grab a dice to roll. Your first roll will determine your color scheme...and then 5 more rolls to see which animals and figures you will get. I then want you to draw those figures on a sheet of WHITE paper using only the natural color scheme you rolled for. IF you do not have a dice you may simply pick your favorites from each category. Have fun creating some prehistoric cave art, and I look forward to seeing what you create!

I want you to pick one word (or phrase) from each of the five sections to form a unique (and quite silly) sentence. Baby it’s COLD outside! Sometimes a heavy coat, scarf, hat, gloves, and boots just aren’t enough. Sometimes you need...hot cocoa! So that’s precisely what we’re going to make for our final art lesson before break. Using a sheet of WHITE paper (not lined please) you will draw a large mug. The best way to do this is to simply draw a big “U” shape for the body of the mug and an oval on top of that. Draw a rainbow shape for the handle, and a line behind your mug too show that it’s sitting on a table. I’ve also linked a “how to” draw a mug video for help. Now you will decorate the tablecloth and wallpaper behind your mug with fun patterns and shapes. Do the same for the mug itself. Color it in and don’t forget to add marshmallows! One of my favorite things to do to finish off this assignment is to pull apart cotton balls and use them as the steam coming from my mug. Glue the cotton on there, or draw some steamy looking wavy lines and share your work with me when done! Happy break and I will see you all when we get back!

Hi all! For this lesson we'll be creating a winter landscape. You will need a sheet of white paper (not lined/held portrait orientation) and a sharpie marker (or black crayon). Go ahead and draw in one large hill on the bottom. Behind that hill draw another smaller hill (see examples). This will create something in your artwork called "atmospheric perspective" which will make it look like one hill is closer to you, and the other is farther away. Using your marker/crayon go ahead and draw in a moon, or a sun. Now, using a pencil go ahead and draw some footprints marching through the white snow on your hills. Here's the fun part...using colored pencils, crayons, or even watercolor paint I want you to use multiple layers of colors for the sky. What colors you choose are up to you! Afterwards (if you've used watercolors let it dry!) you are going to go in with your sharpie marker or crayon and draw some bare trees of different sizes. Make sure the branches are pointing up! The finishing touch will be to add some snowflakes. You can do this with a Q-tip and white acrylic paint...you can cut tiny bits of white paper and glue them on...or use a white oil pastel. I like to use the remnants from my 3-hole punch and glue them on. Up to you! Share your winter wonderland landscapes with me when you're done!

Welcome back, I hope you all had a relaxing break!

This week I wanted to focus on our artist of the month for December: Andy Warhol. Read a little more about him on our Artist of the Month page here in the classroom, and go ahead and watch the video below. He was famous for a style of art called "Pop Art" back in the 1950's which became popular in the US and UK and focused on everyday familiar objects and even famous people from popular culture. Warhol made artwork out of things like Campbell's soup cans, Coca Cola, Brillo pads, and celebrities at the time like Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, and even Elvis to name a few using a combination of painting and a process called screen printing.

Pop artists wanted to draw attention to the fact that everything in the world was connected...commercial products and famous people could still be considered high art as far as they were concerned. Andy Warhol just loved to turn the ordinary into something extraordinary, and he used lots of bright, vivid colors to do it!

For this assignment you are also going to be thinking like a pop artist. I want you to take a sheet of white paper and fold it into four sections. Now I want you to also pick something from popular culture today. It could be a brand named food you have lying around your house like a cereal, soup can, or name brand candy...a common item like a doughnut, a banana, or a cupcake...a cleaning product...a popular celebrity you like from your favorite show or band...or it could even be yourself! Remember that whatever you choose you will be drawing 4 different times...once in each of the 4 sections. Afterwards you will color each section in using 2 different contrasting colors. Each section should have a different set of colors (see examples below). As always share your work with me when you're done, and I will not accept pictures from the internet that have been recolored and copy/pasted. Have fun!

*FUN FACT!* - Did you know that when Kellogg's Pop Tarts first came out they were originally named "Fruit Scones", but because of the Pop Art trend going on at the time Kellogg's decided to get on board and re-branded the food as "Pop Tarts"!

Hi there! This week’s lesson will be based on our artist of the month for November, who just so happens to be a lady by the name of Faith Ringgold. She’s an artist born in Harlem, NY who is known for many things...painting, sewing “story quilts”, sculpture, performance art, and even writing children’s books! Her best known book is probably, “Tar Beach” which I remember having read to me as a child. Your lesson for this week will be to check out our Artist of the Month page. Next, you will then listen to the story of, “Tar Beach” as read by Faith. Next, I want you to draw me a picture based on this question: “If you could fly anywhere in the world just like Cassie, where would you fly?”

Please draw yourself flying over this destination. Around your artwork please add a border of quilt-like squares just like Faith would (like the example below) using different colors and patterns. Color it in, add lots of detail, have fun, and of course show me your work when you’re done!

Hello! For this lesson you will be creating a drawing for me out of a letter. I want you to pick just ONE letter from the alphabet. You can have a parent assign you this letter, or you can pick your own. You will draw that letter very large and bold on a sheet of white (unlined) paper and turn the letter into some sort of animal! Get creative with it, have fun, and please include a background! I do expect to see these colored in as well. Art can be pretty plain without color. Share your work with me when you’re done! Hello! For this week’s lesson we’re going to be drawing lions. BUT...these lions will have a mane made out of many different types of lines! The lion is our mascot here at MCS so why not right? First you will take a white sheet of paper, and in the center of it draw me the head of a lion. Radiating outward from the lion’s head you will draw him a mane using MANY different types of lines. I’ve included a line sample sheet to use, and a sample of some finished work so you know what I’m expecting. Have fun with it, and use LOTS of different lines! Color your lion in yellow and use several different colors for the mane. When you’re done, send it to me so I can see your wonderful line lions! How many of you have ever watched a Tim Burton movie? The Nightmare Before Christmas? Frankenweenie? The Corpse Bride? Coraline? If you have you know he has a very particular style for his characters...small chins, large eyes, small mouths, and crazy hair using very dull colors like grays, blacks, and whites. This week you will be drawing YOURSELF in a Tim Burton style. I have attached a lot of examples for you to look at. I would like to see only your shoulders, a thin neck, a head, facial features: eyes, nose, mouth etc., and hair all in a Tim Burton style. Please do this on white paper and use a black colored pencil to outline and add shading where needed. After you are done please add a decorative frame around your self portrait and share it with me!

In honor of our artist of the month for October, Georgia O’Keeffe, we will also be making a work of art in her style. First watch this video all about Georgia. Afterwards you will create an O’Keeffe style work by drawing or even painting me a very large (and very up close) flower. If you don’t have real flowers lying around for reference you are free to scour the internet for pictures of flowers to inspire you. Georgia preferred paint, especially watercolors, so if you can go that route I suggest you do. Otherwise any art supplies will do. Georgia loved to pay attention to the little details of flowers no one noticed, so get up close and personal with a flower and let’s see what you can create in the style of Georgia O’Keeffe!

Hello again!

This week you will be getting outside and collecting as many different colored leaves as possible. You will then bring those leaves inside and create people out of them. Yes people! Leaf people!

Use skinny leaves for the legs and arms, bigger leaves for the body, different shaped leaves for the head, and an assortment of smaller leaves for the hair. Glue your creations to a sheet of white paper and add some googly eyes if you have some at home! If not you can make some eyes out of paper and glue on, or draw them on with marker if the leaf isn’t too fragile. Don’t forget to add a background. Have fun with it, use your imaginations, and let’s see what you can create!

Believe it or not, in the world of Art teachers, September 15th is always known as "Dot Day". We're a little late but we can still celebrate! First we are going to start out watching a reading of the story, "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. I've attached that below. Afterwards I want you to create a black dot all your own.

This could be cut out of black construction paper, or a a circle of regular white paper that is colored black. You're then going to glue that black dot anywhere onto a new sheet of white paper and show me what that black dot could be. Maybe a black hole in space? A worm hole? A portal to another galaxy? A balloon? An eyeball? It's up to you, please just use your imagination and have fun!

For this assignment you will be learning all about Surrealism, which is art based on dreams. It can be a little weird and wacky just like dreams can be! Our artist for the month of September is Salvador Dalí, a famous Spanish Surrealist. Below is a video for you to watch all about his life, and another video explaining what Surrealism is. Afterwards you will be creating a work of Surrealist art in the style of Dalí's famous sculpture, "Lobster Telephone".

I want you to pick one living thing, and combine it with one nonliving thing. Perhaps a dog toothbrush? A fish clock? A cat hairbrush? Use any supplies you have at home, use your imagination, and have fun with it! It's okay if it's a little strange because that's just how Surrealist artists liked it.
