Feeling Excited about Rubik's Cube! It was the first day with them!

We are learning about patterns, sequence, and making rules in Math.  Doing these things is all over the place and there is nothing more fun and challenging than learning the combinations to solve this puzzle. The kids will share what they learn as they learn it with each other. The goal is for everyone to learn how to solve the Edge (1x3), Mini (2x2), or Cube (3x3).

Morning Meeting Activity
The kids are throwing a little bean bag at each other!

I divided the online and in-class kids into three groups. Then had them throw a little hacky sack to the classmate with the same number that was home if they were throwing in class and vice versa. The kids did so well playing with each other this morning. It is good to have some silliness together.

We are building our class relationships all the time and in many ways.

Indoor Recess

We have had lots of time together today with the copious amounts of precipitation. All of our Recess has been inside.
The kids have enjoyed time playing Mancala, talking about Clarissssa, drawing, and testing their skills with the Maze Ball. They are socializing very nicely.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The Second Quarter is Over!

The kids did a great job writing in cursive to create a perfectly dyed scroll that looks like it came straight from the Middle Ages which was the time period of the literature novel we read called The Whipping Boy. The role they had in this Readers and Writers Workshop piece was to be a Herald. Here you can see Hawk has finished all the work and is ready to read his announcement to the crowd!

"A Great Community Effort!"

All it takes is one person to have an idea and share it to take hold. This idea from Ms. Karl, Eirene's Mom, has been a very positive step in education for our community.
It is also a great example of revision--just like we do in RW/WW!
Community members gathered together through Zoom Meetings to discuss how to best create a message of hope and togetherness during this pandemic. Their thoughtful process which took several weeks gave way to the message.
The step they took to work together says a lot about Moscow!

Eirene brought in the sign for us and celebrate how the public can do good together! Yay for collaboration and revision-- a real-life RW/WW!

Working on Lexia for 20 minutes
This program helps with the structure of language.

Also, on their tables is 3 pieces of dyed paper for scroll project drying. The scroll project is coming together!

There are many pieces in our day and it is good to see the kids working so hard.

Revision for the writing that will be in the scroll.

The interesting part of communication is taking the time to get to what you want to say clearly. Here the kids are using their texts for details and carefully explaining what part in the story of The Whipping Boy they like and explaining why. We had a Writers' Circle so that they all know the parts they picked. Sharing helps them clarify what they want and need to say.
Every student picked a different part -- that is what is so cool about using literature!

On the Smartboard and Whiteboard are examples for them to see revision on my own writing for this RAFTS. It always helps to model what we are looking for. The paragraphs they are doing are very interesting to read.

Experimenting with Tea and Coffee to dye paper for the Scroll Project ๐Ÿ“œ

The kids here, Victoria and Luke compare how different their pages look. One had coffee, the other tea. The class also made a prediction that each page would take 2 hours to dry too and were already revising that idea in the time it took for each classmate to dye their paper.

Working on the look of the scroll has been fun. They have torn the pages for an old weathered feel. Crinkling the paper had the tea and coffee act differently too. The best comment came from Luna who said, " Not this is a coffeeโ˜• table,"  as she had her paper drying there.๐Ÿ˜

Coffee or Tea? We are dying paper for our Scroll Project๐Ÿ“œ

Integrating Science and RW/WW today, we made a prediction about how which would give a darker hue to the paper, either coffee or tea? The kids experimented this morning and will choose the look they like. We will also try using the syringes to give the paper darker spots. Before this, we had an excellent writer's circle about the part of the book The Whipping Booy they are going to cite that they liked.

Student Teacher Hayley Fleischman on Zoom for a.m. Readers Writers Workshop

We are off to doing our lessons together! Ms. Fleischman is a great addition to our 2nd Semester. Working with the University of Idaho's Education Program has been a wonderful collaboration.

Cohort Gift Exchange was a totalllllly fun time and an absolute success!

The kids really enjoyed sharing and giving with each other.
Everyone gave and everyone received! They all kept the information a surprise. It was so neat in Morning Meeting to see the reactions from the kids when they found out who their classmate giver was-- lovely smiles and giggles.

   Thank you families!
Have a healthy holiday break! Talk to you next in 2021!

The kids are bringing in their presents for their ๐ŸŽSecret Cohort Classmate!
It has been so fun to watch them bring them in so carefully and want the fun to be shared!
Everyone will open together on Friday Morning in our Morning Meeting!
Some Cohort A kids will be bringing home gifts today-- others will get their present when it gets dropped off at school. I will email you if you need to come by the  MCS Main Office to pick it up.

Thanks, Ms. Bonzo๐Ÿฆ‰

Now that is some note-taking!

Here, Isaac displays one of several pages of similes from the novel that we are reading as a class Literature Circle. His work is a wonderful example of how the kids can construct information and learn to organize their work in their composition notebooks that they can analyze later. ๐Ÿ‘
Each day we get to discuss which was their favorite simile. We also put one each day in the Planners.

Technology Creates Morning Meeting Togetherness!

In our Morning Meeting today, the kids do announcements at the last part. Today, you can see Eirene sharing some of her math monsters with everyone.
๐Ÿ˜ The kids have really enjoyed seeing each other. And, anticipation is mounting for the fun to come with the Cohort Secret Gift Exchange. Today, Cohort A will bring home the little double stapled info sheet of a classmate from Cohort B! And today Cohort A will fill out their sheets for Cohort B to bring home on Friday. (It's okay to read all that again-- there are a bunch of moving parts!) Remember, the kids have the handout with the important dates. ๐ŸŽ

Enjoying the Sunshine at the Geodome! ๐ŸŒž

The kids of Cohort B had a great time playing together this afternoon.
It has been so different at school that I feel like I haven't been able to show the kids doing their kid things. Being at school matters on so many levels. Learning together takes many forms.
It is good to show you that they are playing and have adapted to all the changes and love to be outside. That makes them feel good and connected to each other.

Hope you all have a good weekend and are able to get some time to play too.

Take Care, Ms. Bonzo๐Ÿฆ‰
