MCS Current News

Introduction to the New Site

11/11/2009 - Announcements

I am pleased to announce that the MCS website is now repowered with the Ultranet content management system.

The Ultranet is extremely feature rich and very intuitive to manage, with a nearly non-existent learning curve - my goal has been to produce a system that will be as easy to use for a first-grader as it would be for the teacher, and I am hopeful this will meet and exceed any current or future need the Moscow Charter School will have.

I am hoping to have a public meeting soon where I will give a presentation to school board, staff, and any other interested parties about the website, so that everyone can be brought up to speed on the capabilities of the new site.

This new site uses a content management system I invented called the Ultranet, currently in use by over 100 websites at Washington State University, including their flagship University Relations websites WSU Today, WSU News Service, WSU Announcements, and the WSU Calendar.

While management systems exist to allow content on pages to be modified, that is really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is possible. The Ultranet includes scalable and flexible group and access level based access control systems that allow us to create user-manageable pages or sections of the website that can be maintained collaboratively, and each account on the site is able to access a full-featured integrated blog system. Using this, teachers can provide their students with web pages for individual or group projects, and can even provide distance learning opportunities via realtime chat if they like.

The Ultranet includes a very capable news and information system with archive capabilities, an event calendar system that supports Outlook integration, and Excel formatted export capabilies, and these two systems work together in support of a newsletter generator to allow staff a very simple way to generate an email newsletter campaign. RSS feeds are integrated into the site, and of course with a full-text keyword search, the Ultranet will make it very easy for users to locate the information they need.

The Ultranet also includes video archive capabilities, slideshow and video integration, infinite content and links systems, document archives, and supports real-time form designers that allow a form of any complexity to be designed and added to a page at will, to collect infromation from users. RSS feeds from external locations can be added to any page of the site, and news and events that are added to the site are automatically added to the home page as well.

All of this is really still just the tip of a very large iceberg! I am very excited to be able to provide these capabilities for the Moscow Charter School, and looking forward to seeing what opportunities this will open up for the school!
