Dear MCS Families,
This has been a wonderful week. We had a surprise guest speaker. Dr. John L. Phillips, who is a retired US astronaut came and talked to the children about his experience on the space station. Dr. Phillips flew into space three times: In 2001 aboard STS-100, space shuttle Endeavour; in 2005 on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for a six month stay on the International Space Station; in 2009 on STS-119, space shuttle Discovery. He brought two gloves with him that he wore in space which he passed around for children to try on. I have posted his autographed photo and his space patches on the bulletin board in the front lobby for all to see.
The teachers are working on their Pay for Performance criteria. One of our goals is to Establish a participatory Professional Learning Community (PLC) where each teacher would take an opportunity to instruct the rest of the staff in one of our STEAM areas. This past Wednesday Kathy Knott, our fifth grade teacher, conducted a hands on workshop for the teachers on how to use spread sheet. The workshop was very informative and helped to raise teacherís technology skills.
As a staff we are reading the book, Engaging The Eye Generation, Visual Literacy Strategies For The K-5 Classroom, by Johanna Riddle. The book helps teachers to understand how to bridge the road to literacy in the 21st Century which includes more than ready text. The new literacy includes interpreting and communicating information through a variety of digital and print based formats using imagery, online applications, audio-video, and traditional texts.
Please remember that on October 31st the entire school grades one through 6 will be going on a field trip to WSU to view various displays and Museums. The buses for this program are funded by a grant from the Washington State University Museum of Art. The kindergarten will have the run of the school that day. They plan on taking part in a Celebration of Fall which will include pumpkin math and face painting.
A few reminders, the fun run on Oct 29th has been canceled. Instead we are planning a Turkeys on the Move on November 22nd. Fun run on the school grounds at lunch time along with a canned food drive.
Stay tuned for more information on our busy fall schedule
