Dear MCS Families
Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful Winter Break. The children came back to school with a renewed excitement about school. Our Monday Morning Meeting was a real highlight to the New Year’s celebration as the second grade did a mini concert that included a violin solo, a trio of singers presenting Christmas carols and we also had a beautifully sung solo.
Mrs. Kintner quizzed us on our knowledge of the song “Auld Lang Syne” We learned that “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. We also learned that the song is well known in many English-speaking countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight. The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long, long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, is loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times." It was great fun to sing the song together as a school to ring in the New Year. The first grade will be in charge of next weeks Monday Morning Meeting.
There are some important calendar changes so, please take note. First, the Winter Arts Festival entitled “Winter Sole-Stice” is planned for Friday, February 4th at the HIRC. The PAT has generously sponsored the rental fee for the HIRC that evening. We will be opening the doors for seating at 6:30pm with the program scheduled to begin at 6:45pm. The presentation should take no more than an hour and all students will have an active roll in the presentation. We are asking students to wear blue jeans and an all white shirt as their costume. We are excited to have comfortable seating, an all inclusive program and lots of available parking. Please see the website for more information.
Another change to the Calendars is the PAT meeting which will be held on March 8th instead of March 12th . At this meeting, the PAT will be electing new officers. This is such an important group and we need to have enthusiastic participation. Please consider becoming more involved in the activities at the school and come and work with our PAT.
If you know of any students interested in attending Moscow Charter School please invite them to come and see some of the things we do here. We can schedule a tour for them. Or better yet, invite them to the Winter Arts Festival and see first hand the great things that we are doing here at MCS.
You should have received an email regarding current cafeteria balances. Along with this, the price of milk from the district provider has gone up and it has made it necessary to raise the price to 30cents. This price change will be effective immediately. Thank you for your understanding.
The end of the marking period is coming. Students are off on January 21, 2011 in order to give teachers time to do the report cards. Students will be bring home these report cards on Monday, January 24, 2011. So, be sure to be looking for them. Parents who have concerns or questions about the report card can schedule a meeting with the teacher.
Wishing you all good things in 2011,
Marie Axman Ed.D.
