Kindergarten learning is all about action and exciting discovery! Through hands-on experiences the students will learn many different skills this year.

Starfall Learn to Read
Language Arts

  • Reading skills include phonemic awareness, phonics, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, comprehension skills, prior knowledge and oral presentations as well as skits and poetry recitations.

  • Listening skills will be taught with audio centers, oral directions and fun listening games.

  • Writing will be taught with handwriting skills, illustrated original stories, guided practice and independent practice.

Math

  • Everyday Math will be used as well as many math centers, games and practice to sharpen addition, subtraction, geometry, patterns, grouping and yes, even pre-algebra skills. Days of the week, mathematical vocabulary, graphing, measurement and monetary values are also covered.

Science

  • Science is based on plant, animal and human families. We will discover the wonder of metamorphosis, tropisms, habitats, environmental interactions and many more scientific wonders as the students show individual interests. Working with teams will be introduced, the five senses will be covered as will living and non-living characteristics explored.

Social Studies

  • Communities and the basics about the seven continents top the list of Kindergarten Social Studies. The symbols of the United States will also be a focus. My favorite part of all is the Australian style Barbeque before Winter Break. The students learn what Australia is like in December with an all-out barbeque with hot dogs, potato salad, swimming suits and beach towels as well as Australian games and activities.

Health

  • The Second Step Curriculum will be used for Health as will many lessons on cleanliness, germs, exercise and cooperation with peers.

Centers

  • Centers will be held every day to accommodate many of the above mentioned skills. Centers are very interactive and student-oriented. I will need parental help to run the daily centers. I will have centers in the morning as well as in the afternoon. Please contact Tracy Hoffmeister at the school to let me know when you can help run a center!
